University Alumni Football League (UAFL)

Once again, alumni football players in the country got the chance to represent their alma mater in the University Alumni Football League (UAFL). The UAFL kicked off on October 21, 2018, to December 2, 2018, in the grass fields of the Manila Jockey Club. The Manila Jockey club has once hosted a leg of the Ateneo vs. La Salle Football clash. For the first time in local football, San Lazaro Park has opened its door to an alumni league, with more participating schools. Sponsors Alcoline and Chivas of Pernod-Ricard will light up the perfectly leveled fields of Manila Jockey Club’s San Lazaro Park allowing the alumni stars to shine and relive their glory days.

Not one, but three of the pristine full-sized football fields of the Manila Jockey Club’s San Lazaro Park in Carmona, Cavite were the battlefield for the one thousand gifted alumni from DLSU, Ateneo, UST, UP, and San Beda. Eleven spectacular matches were played, each one with tight contention. Groups were segregated into five divisions: 21 to 30, 31 to 40, 41-47, 48 above, and an open women’s division. Players on the field astonished the crowd, showing them that they still have the skills and techniques of their younger years.

The matchdays of October 21, November 4, 11, 25, and December 2 were aired live on Gametime TV channel 109. It was truly a major football league. The event was enjoyed by both registered players and spectators. Admission was free and everyone enjoyed their favorite foods and treats with food trucks that sold a variety of grub to eat. As promised by the tournament director Cathy Nazareno, the whole environment would be festive; and it truly was.

The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers came out on top and seized the crown of the UAFL. The Fighting Maroons of the University of the Philippines trailed UST by 5 points giving them second place, the De La Salle University Green Archers came in third with 27 points, two points behind them are the Ateneo Blue Eagles, and fifth came San Beda with 13 points.

Whole seasons round, the UAFL was a sporting event that gave former university players a chance to shine again. Everyone enjoyed this massive football event. We hope to see more alumni sports events in the future. The UAFL thanks Adidas for supplying the official match ball, Gatorade as the official hydration partner, CNN Philippines the media partner, alcohol distributor Alcoline, Chivas of Pernod-Ricard, Bagwings, Animo Magazine, AIA Vitality, Philamlife, Bootcamp, and Belle and Dragon.
